Bachelor’s degree in Geology from the University of Brasília, 1976, and PhD in Molecular Geochemistry applied to Petroleum Exploration from the University of Bristol, England, 1989. Mello had a 24-year career at Petrobras, where he developed highly specialized studies about petroleum systems for most of the sedimentary basins in Brazil, Africa and Latin America.

At Petrobras he held several managerial and technical positions such as Head of the Organic Geochemistry Section of Petrobras Research Center (1982-1995) and Head of the Geochemistry Center of Excellence (1996-1999). He founded and headed the first Petrobras Center of Excellence (CEGEQ), considered to be one of the best laboratories of petroleum geochemistry worldwide.

In 2000, he left Petrobras and founded Analytical Solutions (AS) and Petroleum and Environment Geosciences (PEG) in Rio de Janeiro, both considered to be the leading G&G service and laboratory companies with more than 500 professionals. In 2004, both companies were sold. Also in 2004, he founded High Resolution Technology & Petroleum Ltda. The company became leader in G&G consulting and laboratory services in the southern hemisphere.

Mello has published over 300 papers, including books on geology and geochemistry related to petroleum exploration around the world. In 1998, he received the Distinguished AAPG Achievement Award and, in 2000, the Robert H. Dott Sr. Memorial Award for the publication of Petroleum System of South Atlantic Margins, considered by AAGP as the best publication of that year.

Mello is the former president of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), Latin America Section, and founder and current president of the Brazilian Association of Petroleum Geologists (ABGP). At HRT he is the Chief Executive Officer and a member of the board.
